~ The weather was beautiful today, inspiring me to do something that I haven’t done in many months, sweep my patio! Having an outdoor space is such a gift. I have a spot to host casual summer gatherings with friends and family. I have my own personal respite from day-to-day stress, where I can snuggle up with a good book and maybe even sneak in a nap. I also have the ability to set up a last-minute, but still very romantic, date-night.
This summer, I really want to maximize my time outdoors. Armed with sunscreen, here are some ideas that I am exploring to make my patio my favorite place to be this summer.
Add Comfortable Furniture that Invites Guests to Linger
I currently have very comfortable Adirondack chairs, but a few pillows that could stand up to outdoor conditions would definitely make them more inviting. I also have my eye on a hammock, as I don’t think there is anything more glorious than taking a nap in the sunshine. A hammock from Overstock is just up my alley. If you are crafty, though, The Garden Glove has great DIY hammocks.
A tiny table or a bench is also handy to rest drinks on and for clustering candles to create a relaxed vibe. Though not my favorite scent, I like citronella candles to help repel insects. To save money on outdoor furniture, I’m going to check out local thrift stores, but IKEA also has some very affordable and durable plastic furniture that would work. Either way, you can add inexpensive tiles to almost any surface to add style and create a surface that is easy to clean.
Add Some Whimsy!
Don’t be afraid to incorporate items that you love. Festive lighting, rocks or seashells from favorite vacations, a bold rug, lanterns, and wind chimes will all help to create your own personal oasis.
I often see old windows that I think are beautiful on the side of the road. I was never quite sure what to do with them. The Brambleberry Cottage has step-by-step instructions on how to salvage old windows and turn them into beautiful art for your deck or patio.
I am a sucker for festive lights. They are so inexpensive and make every occasion feel more special. Instead of heading to the store, I may dig some out of my holiday decorations in storage. Why only use them once a year? I would recommend skipping multi-colored lights though, simply as a courtesy to your neighbors.
Embrace the Outdoors with Your Own Unique Garden
If you don’t have a lot of yard space, you can create a micro garden. I’m planning on planting a combination of herbs that I can use all summer–basil, cilantro, rosemary, as well as some magnolias and citronella to help keep insects at bay.
I hope these ideas have helped inspire you to revamp your outdoor space this summer. Once all the hard work is done, relax with a lemonade and enjoy the fruits of your labor!
