King’s Garden at Rosenborg Castle, Copenhagen
Visit beautiful Copenhagen and you will find yourself drawn to Kongens Have, the King’s Garden in Copenhagen. Originally designed for Christian IV in 1606, King’s Garden is the palace garden at Rosenborg Castle, where the national royal treasury is housed. This is Denmark’s oldest national palace garden. The gardens were enhanced and parts were recreated during Denmark’s Renaissance Year celebrations in 2006.
The design of the King’s Gardens is primarily in Renaissance style, although elements in Baroque and Romantic styles were added in these respective periods of influence. It is delightful to see the repetition and symmetry in the garden patterns.
In the 17th century, the grounds were laid out as pleasure gardens, although it is supposed that parts of the grounds also provided the royal household with a nearby source of fresh vegetables and fruit. Primarily, though, this was the king’s private garden where members of the family could enjoy taking walks together or with their visiting guests.
Choices of plants and colour schemes in today’s garden borders were selected based on plant lists compiled in 1642 by royal botanist Otho Sperling.
The lovely and popular King’s Garden, which draws 2.5 million guests annually, includes the formal rose garden, a long herbaceous border, sculptures, and avenues and walkways. Owned by the state and open to public, the gardens are beautifully maintained by the Denmark’s Agency for Palaces & Cultural Properties.
