Frederiksborg Castle Gardens, Denmark
On visiting Copenhagen, Denmark in April 2014, one of the first day trips we made was a visit to the baroque gardens at Frederiksborg Castle. Approaching Frederiksborg from Hillerød Square, the visitor doesn’t yet get a glimpse of the immense formal garden and the adjacent landscaped gardens that lie beyond the palace. For those with a longer opportunity to explore the grounds than we had on the day of our trip, a visit to the Museum of National History within the palace would be well worth the time.
Located a few hours’ train ride north of Copenhagen, Frederiksborg Palace is the largest Renaissance palace in Scandinavia. Construction began in 1560 and continued with new additions and rebuilding through to 1620. Built originally as a residence for Danish King Frederik II and later for King Christian IV, the Palace was the site of many royal ceremonial events well into the 19th century.
On visiting the Frederiksborg Castle Gardens with my husband and daughter, we made our way around the castle, which is built across three islands, and over to the gorgeous baroque gardens – perhaps more properly called Dutch Renaissance style – and then on to the landscaped gardens lying beyond. The gardens were originally built around 1725. Not surprisingly, over time, these extensive gardens experienced some neglect. Thanks to renewed interest in the historical garden setting, the distinctive baroque gardens were recreated and opened in 1996, based on original drawings prepared by J.C. Krieger, King Frederik II’s architect and garden artist. The gardens today feature a beautiful recreation of the historic Renaissance gardens, and provide garden lovers with a wonderful opportunity to step back in time.
There is no admission charge to the Frederiksborg Castle Gardens and they can be visited year-round. The garden’s cascades and fountains open on May 1, and in summer, music can often be heard in the castle gardens during the season of outdoor concerts and special events.
